Removing Kid’s Paint From Carpet

Nov 9, 2023 | General Cleaning Tips

If you have children, you’re probably among the many other parents who believe there’s a magnet in the carpet that attracts their children’s paint. Sure, you could get rid of paint in your home, but letting your children explore their artistic side can be very beneficial! Luckily, there’s a great fix for paint on the carpet, and contrary to popular belief, it’s typically easier to remove than many other stains. So, check out these tips to remove paint from your carpet!

Treating Wet Paint

If paint was recently spilled on your carpet and is still wet, DO NOT start blotting and scrubbing. This can actually damage the carpet fibers and is the worst thing you can do to clean it up. Blotting and scrubbing push the paint deeper into your carpet, making it even harder to remove.

Instead, lay a dry towel down that can soak up the paint. You’ll need to repeat this process multiple times until the moisture is totally absorbed, but it will give you a much better result. It requires patience, but it will be much better in the long run.

Treating Dried Paint

After you’ve finished soaking up the moisture, let the rest of the paint dry overnight. Then you can try one of the following three methods to remove the dried paint:

  1. Knife or Razor- Being extremely careful, you can sometimes pick the dried paint off of your carpet with a sharp edge. If it’s especially stuck on, try scrubbing the dried paint with a dry rag to break up the paint, and once you’ve picked off the paint from the carpet, vacuum the area.
  2. Nail Polish Remover- With an old rag or brush, apply some nail polish remover on the dried paint. You’ll see the paint start to fade after you do this a few times, so keep it up until the paint is completely gone. After, rinse the area with cold water and dab it up with a rag, finishing by vacuuming the area.
  3. WD-40- This lubricant spray does an incredible job breaking down dried paint. Spray the area and wait 30 minutes before repeating the process. When you’re done, rinse with water and vacuum.
